IN THE WORDS OF RIFIKI--"IT IS TIME":

Baseball Preview 2004 (NY Times, 4/04/04)

The Yankees have the game's most complete player: Alex Rodriquez. The Cubs, Red Sox and Mets have bad memories but high hopes. Preview includes an interactive feature with the baseball writers of The Times.

"Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball."

All Spring and Winter professional baseball analysis aside, I personally think the Red Sox got the better end of things this winter in adding Curt Schilling. Pitching is what wins games.

It is stupid to say that A-Rod won't help the Yanks; however, the Yanks lost Andy P. and Roger C. Have they made that up this Winter and Spring? We shall see.

We shall also see who the Yanks will pick up throughout the season and who is available.

Remember, the Rangers had A-Rod and they were cellar-dwellers. Grant it, the Rangers didn't have the supporting cast the Yanks have (nor did they have a real manager). Most importantly, the Rangers had terrible pitching. It is all about pitching.

"Most complete," only if you're not counting souls...

Barzun's comment made sense 35 or 40 years ago, but not today.

jim:

Not today when a baseball owner is president?

If you could show that the 'baseball' vote was decisive, I would recant. But Bush was smart: he moved on to better things.
