SO ADVANCED, SO SOPHISTICATED, SO EUROPEAN:

Police Tell Fetishist to Move Upmarket (Reuters, 2/20/2004; via The Rat)

A German bondage fetishist got so chained up he had to call police to remove his cuffs ...

Police received no answer from the house until the man appeared at a window and flung out the door keys with his teeth.

On entering, they were confronted by the sight of a heavily-chained man shuffling toward them on his knees with his head bowed, dressed only in shiny black leather and white socks.

"To visualize the appearance of the afflicted party, one would have to imagine a penguin of waist-height waddling with slightly protruding wings," Aachen police said in a statement.

Possibly this was the foreign leader who's rooting for John Kerry.

Well, at least it is legal there; unlike say dildos in Texas or Alabama.

If OJ is going to judge all Europeans by this kinky fellow's standards (not that I class myself as European), then what's to stop the rest of the world judging Americans by these standards?.

Gary - You say it like that's a good thing.

Brit - First, don't blame oj for this assault on international comity. Second, if the rest of the world did that, they might be right! (Every nation's may go crazy in its own way; I'd rather have crazy people who dream of impossible fortunes than crazy people who dream of being chained and whipped.)

pj,

Who am I to judge whether it is a "good thing" or not? That the essence of liberty; and I don't need the liberal or conservative nanny-staters to determine that for me (or anyone else).

Liberating a German who's heavily into bondage sounds like the ultimate in police brutality....

And I'm as much for "live-and-let-live" as the next guy; but white socks with black leather? They should put that guy away for good.

(Or if that's too cruel and unusual, at least in a cell with Martha Stewart.)

Gary,

I agree with your main point, that the state should not punish people for these sorts of things. However, with the state now punishing groups who criticize politicians within 60 days of an election, and with many other infringements upon liberty, I can't get worked up over laws against dildos. And I don't agree that not judging is the "essence of liberty."

I think this is more of the stuff that gets on those "World's Weirdest Police Videos" shows. (Too bad there's no "Deuschtland's Dumbest Polizei Calls" show...)

As well as being the major topic of conversation at the police station for a couple of weeks. I think every cop in every country probably has some weird-ass story like this.
