EUROPE'S CANDIDATE:
John Kerry: The hope of the world (The Guardian, March 4, 2004)
The free world has never had a stronger interest in the result of a US election than it has in the defeat of Mr Bush. Senator Kerry carries the hopes not just of millions of Americans but of millions of British well-wishers, not to mention those of nations throughout Europe and the world.
Yes, he's adored in the free world, because folks think he'll return us to our pre-9/11 slumber and we can all stop worrying about how the wogs live. Posted by Orrin Judd at March 3, 2004 11:55 PM
Oh, Europe will be very pleased when President Kerry implements his protectionist policies and ruins European exports to the US. They'll love it, because it will allow them to close all those polluting car factories in Germany. As the saying goes, be Kerryful what you wish for...

Posted by: Peter B at March 4, 2004 5:54 AMThe euro-adulation is only going to get more unbearable. Starry-eyed endorsements from The Guardian cuold be dismissed/understood as akin to an endorsement by ANSWER Intl. or Hamas. But be prepared to throw up when you begin to see pro-business/globalization outlets (my guess, The Economist, the FT, and others) look at a Kerry-Gephardt ticket (along with all the usual suspects it would carry along) in the face and suddenly discover that these guys were "not so bad after all on trade, globalization, deregulation, free markets, etc." And all because of this pathological dislike Bush and crude misunderstanding of what it is to be an American.

Posted by: Andrew X at March 4, 2004 8:18 AMSo far, Europeans haven't flown airplanes into skyscrapers here. The fundamental question remains who our REAL enemies wish were president. You can bet it isn't Mr. Bush.

Posted by: oj at March 4, 2004 11:34 AMJust because Kerry says he'll do something doesn't mean he'll actually do it. Just ask the Enviromentalists and the AFL-CIO, one of them is going to be deeply disappointed by how the guy they endorsed handles ANWR.
Posted by: MarkD at March 4, 2004 6:18 PMKerry knows very well that even if five billion, seven hundred million people on Earth wish him well, and hope he's the next President of the United States, it's up to the three hundred million who are actually allowed to vote for him that count.
It's rather like the coach at some other school opining that you should be on the team at your school.
Posted by: Michael Herdegen at March 5, 2004 5:12 AMThe German Financial Times reports that the Germans love Kerry too. In fact I'd wager every anti-American in the world loves Kerry. He's their Manchurian Candidate.
Posted by: Genecis at March 5, 2004 4:05 PMBut is he as smart as Laurence Harvey? My impression is that donkeys are driven, not brainwashed.
