IF ONLY:
Eight Questions for George Bush (David Corn, The Nation)
Did he decided to use military force against Iraq before 9/11? Where are the WMDs he insisted were there? Why is he using phony budget numbers? Did he engage in less-than-proper business dealings before he entered politics? Why he has misled the public while promoting his policies on stem cells research, global warming, and missile defense? Why has he opposed certain homeland security measures and not adequately funded others? [...]When you ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1978 in Texas, you gave an interview to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal newspaper. You were asked about your position on abortion, and this is how that newspaper reported your answer: "Bush said he opposes the pro-life amendment [which would outlaw abortion] and favors leaving up to a woman and her doctor the abortion question." Sixteen years later, when you ran for governor in Texas in 1994, you campaigned as an antiabortion conservative. Few people seem to realize your position on abortion changed 180 degrees. Please tell us, when did you change your view on abortion and why?
(1) Yes
(2) They and the dctator who developed and used them are gone.
(3) Because the budget is phony
(4) No more than the usual
(5) To get the policies through
(6) Because they're just window dressing anyway
(7) When I realized that fetuses too are human life--is there ever a bad time to choose life?
Posted by Orrin Judd at February 13, 2004 6:50 AMIn regards to question #7, I wonder what is the point of the question. Is Corn trying to show that Bush is a waffler? That he changed his mind for political reasons? If so, then he should attack Jesse Jackson, Richard Gephart, Dennis Kucinich, Al Gore, Tom Daschle and most of the leadership of the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party is the party of abortion. I can count on my right hand all the pro-life Democrats (and one of them is dead, Bob Casey). My Senator Ben Nelson is pro-life. Actually, the Republican Party is the one which had prominent pro-life and pro-abortion politicans. I just don't get the question.
Posted by: pchuck at February 13, 2004 9:55 AMPerhaps Corn should ask Clinton where the WMD are since he insisted they were there, too, throughout the nineties. Clearly he was lying.

"Saddam (Hussein) must not be allowed to threaten his neighbors or the world with nuclear arms, poison gas or biological weapons," Clinton said.
Operation Desert Fox, a strong, sustained series of attacks, will be carried out over several days by U.S. and British forces, Clinton said.
"Earlier today I ordered America's armed forces to strike military and security targets in Iraq. They are joined by British forces," Clinton said.
"Their mission is to attack Iraq's nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors," said Clinton.
Clinton also stated that, while other countries also had weapons of mass destruction, Hussein is in a different category because he has used such weapons against his own people and against his neighbors.

"The best way to end that threat once and for all is with a new Iraqi government -- a government ready to live in peace with its neighbors, a government that respects the rights of its people," Clinton said.
Posted by: GG at February 13, 2004 11:26 AM"There are no stupid questions, but there are stupid people." These questions support that assertion, in that they are all either irrelevant or loaded.
How about a list for similar questions for Senator JF***Kerry?
"How can you be proud of your medals when you threw them over the White House Fence?"
"There's no statute of limitations on war crimes. You testified before Congress about such crimes. Since you wouldn't commit perjury, with such accusations, as President, what steps will you take to bring those people to justice?"
"How can you claim to support the war in Iraq when you voted against funding its funding?"
"Have you stopped harassing the interns yet?"
Question for the Nation magazine: Why have you misled the nation while promotiong your worldview?

Also didn't the change in 7 come after his much discussed conversion experience?
Posted by: Robert Schwartz at February 14, 2004 12:45 AMThe twenty lies of George W. Bush Monday night’s 15-minute speech by President Bush, setting a 48-hour deadline for war against Iraq, went beyond the usual distortions, half-truths, and appeals to fear and backwardness to include a remarkable number of barefaced, easily refuted lies.
