BOOK IT, DANO:

Poll: Bush beats Dean in California: President pulls over 50% of vote in hypothetical contest (WorldNetDaily.com, January 13, 2004)

President Bush, who soundly lost California and its 54 electoral votes to Al Gore in 2000, would win a hypothetical matchup with Democrat Howard Dean in the Golden State, a new poll reveals.

The survey, conducted by Probolsky Research, finds Bush winning a majority of votes, or 50.9 percent. Dean garnered 35.4 percent, while 3.7 percent of respondents would choose a candidate other than Bush or Dean. Ten percent said they were not sure.

It's time to stop conceding the District of Columbia to the Democratic candidate.

Even Maryland would be within reach, if W would just send the most popular man in the state (as measured by votes in the last election) a Christmas card--

"Comptroller William Donald Schaefer joined anti-Dean wing forces on Wednesday, saying Dean's anti-war stance is the only reason for his success.

"At a time like this, I don't think it's right to criticize the president," Schaefer told us Wednesday when asked his opinion on the Democratic presidential candidates.

Schaefer is not too wild about any of the candidates whom he described collectively as "not a very strong group."

Will Schaefer cross party lines and endorse George W. Bush this year the way he endorsed his father in 1992? Don't be so sure.

Seems as though the comptroller is none-to-pleased that he hasn't received a White House Christmas card from W. Schaefer said ever since he was mayor of Baltimore, every president -- Republican or Democrat -- has sent him a Christmas card.

"It would be nice to get a Christmas card from the president, you know," Schaefer said."

Now, let's not get carried away. I remember seeing polls right before the '00 election that indicated Bush had a shot at Cali... it ended up not even close. The Arnie win provides some hope, but remember, the Dems didn't run anything close to their best candidate (they won't make that mistake again) plus, Dean may not win the nomination. I still think Bush will win, but there's an eternity of time between now and November.

MarkD --

So far as it forces the Dems to have to spend a lot of money defending a Blue state, it works even if W loses. Having an R presence in the Governor's mansion and a reasonable challenger to the "dumbest Senator in DC" will help put pressure on the Dems to complement any pressure the RNC and W can exert.

California does not have the "dumbest Senator in DC", though not for lack of trying. But that honor still has to go to the Upper Left Washington.
