Dean Calls For New Controls on Business, Democrat Seeks 'Re-Regulation' (Jim VandeHei, Washington Post, 11/19/03)

After years of government deregulation of energy markets, telecommunications, the airlines and other major industries, Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean is proposing a significant reversal: a comprehensive "re-regulation" of U.S. businesses.

The former Vermont governor said he would reverse the trend toward deregulation pursued by recent presidents -- including, in some respects, Bill Clinton -- to help restore faith in scandal-plagued U.S. corporations and better protect U.S. workers.
Having carefully learned their lessons from the last half-century, the Democrats are going to nominate a Frankencandidate, drawing together George McGovern's foreign policy, Jimmy Carter's economic policy, Walter Mondale's tax policy and Michael Dukakis' biography. Is it possible to get a negative number of electoral votes?

Yes, re-regulation of US businesses by federal drones. That's the ticket!

Why didn't I think of that?!

For the Democrats, not so long as there is a District of Columbia...

Not entirely fair: The process of deregulation began during Carter's administration with the appointment of Alfred Kahn to the Civil Aeronautics Board and subsequent deregulation of the airline and trucking industries. Nixon was worse than Carter on regulation. Remember price controls?

So Dean is going to campaign as the best of Nixon and Carter?

All policy wonk types were enthralled by regulating industry during the last century. The deregulation of the airline industry as well as truking were accom[plished during the Carter administration in the face of much opposition from the left. The coup de grace of deregulation, jhowever, came during the Reagan administration with the energy industry following the oil crisis during the Carter years. It is enlightening to remember what was said regarding energy policy during this period by the likes of Senator Metzenbauam and many others on the left.

The re-regulating, big-government policies being advocated by Howie Dean, in light of our recent history should serve as a warning to all Americans regarding the precarious nature of economic freedom which is at the mercy of whatever idiot politician wins high office.

Nixon's comment ," we are all Keyenesians now" mereley reflected the spirit of 1960's politics and economics. Reagan changed the rules of engagement while Howard Dean and the Left would like to pretend that nothing has changed and the failed, statist approach should be tried again. To repeat over and over unworkable or unsuccessful methods to achieve some end that never comes is a definitive characteristic of insanity. The higher taxes pledge of Mr. Mondale and Mr. Deans recent recomendations regarding more regulation do make sense but only if one honestly believes in the altruistic and selfless nature of those who do government work.

But don't you know why it failed for Mondale, Carter, McGovern, Dukakis, Ford, Nixon and Johnson? He'll succeed where other have failed, because he's Howard Dean, and they weren't.

Vermont must be easy to regulate - people want it there. Now, as for the rest of the nation.....

It's funny that Democrats squeal about regulation as soon as business picks up. One might think they want the economy to stall.
