TWO DOWN, ONE TO GO:

Ueberroth drops out of recall race (AP, September 9, 2003)

Peter Ueberroth, the Republican business executive who built a career taking over troubled situations and turning them around, dropped out of the California recall race on Tuesday.

"I'm going to work very hard to keep jobs in this state and to create jobs in this state, but not as a candidate for governor," he said at his campaign headquarters in Costa Mesa.

The Sacramento Bee's Daniel Weintraub looks at the Chamber of Commerce poll, which suggests that the only thing between Arnold and a fairly decisive win over Bustamante is Tom McClintock.

Paul Cella had some thoughts today on the notion of conservatives vs. Republicans. The thing to remember is that conservatism is a philosophy and a political philosophy is what you'd like to do. Republicanism is a politics and politics is about what you can do. To elevate the former over the latter is a sign of unreason.

It is not enough for McClintock to drop out.
He should swallow his pride and make a public
appearance with Arnold. In return he should get
a high profile policy making position.

Chris:

To compromise is not to forsake. The belief that the two are identical is nought but fanaticism--appropriate to philosophy, but dangerous in politics.
