US army turns over border control to Iraqis (Ireland On Line, 27/09/2003)
The US Army turned over a large stretch of the border separating Iraq from Iran to an American-trained border police force today, for the first time relinquishing control of a sensitive frontier area to the provisional government.The 210-mile length of frontier running from the edges of Kurdish-controlled territory in the north to a point just southeast of Baghdad is part of a broader effort to give Iraqis more control over their affairs and relieve the US military of the burden of guarding the border.
“They are now controlling the border, we are in oversight mode,” said Lt Col Reggie Allen, commanding officer of the 4th Infantry Division’s 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry.

Posted by: andy at September 27, 2003 4:30 PMThe scenario that seems to be becoming more likely is that Iraq is functioning fairly well by spring/summer '04 and the US is pulling out/reducing troops. What the heck are the quagmire folks going to argue then? that the US should have been out after 6 months?

Baring a catastrophe, both will be visibly improving a year from now, and then what message will they have, just before the election?
And even if there is another terrorist attack, how likely is it that voters will blame Bush and flock to Dean or Clark or Kerry or Hillary? Not likely at all.
