GOTTA KNOW YOUR PERLES FROM YOUR KRISTOLS:

Neocon 101 (CS Monitor)

Pretty interesting primer, includes a quiz: Are you a neoconservative?

Realists…

--Are guided more by practical considerations than ideological vision

--Believe US power is crucial to successful diplomacy - and vice versa

--Don't want US policy options unduly limited by world opinion or ethical considerations

--Believe strong alliances are important to US interests

--Weigh the political costs of foreign action

--Believe foreign intervention must be dictated by compelling national interest

Historical realist: President Dwight D. Eisenhower

Modern realist: Secretary of State Colin Powell

Highly enlightening: a Progressive (Teddy Roosevelt) and a conservative (Ronald Reagan) are categorized as neoconservatives.

One question -- if a majority of those who identify as Republicans qualify as "neoconservative" according to this quiz, can we stop calling the people tricking the President into enacting their policies a neoconservative cabal? Or should we concede that neoconservative is not a very precise term these days?

Erk. I was a neocon. Then again, so was Reagan, so I feel ok about it.
