Turkey's EU hope dashed as Cyprus talks falter (Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, Telegraph.co.uk)

The European Union vowed yesterday to press ahead with the admission of a divided Cyprus in 2004 despite a breakdown in peace talks that has virtually doomed Turkey's hopes of joining the EU in the foreseeable future.
The situation on Cyprus is complex and I am by no means an expert. But I am willing to bet that our relationship with Turkey just got a little bit closer.

I don't know . . . it could also be that Turkey's relationship with the West just got a little more distant, and its relationship with the Islamic world a little closer.

That's always a possibility, and a very dangerous one. But the EU wants Turkey's soul, we just want a stable friend and some military bases.

We can only hope that the destabilization of western Asia will lead to the breakup of Turkey, a ridiculous state none of whose citizens wants anything to do with any of the others.
