IF I'M SO UNQUALIFIED, YOU WON'T OBJECT TO A LENGTHY SERIES OF DEBATES, EH?

Let Estrada Turn the Tables on Schumer: If this talented Republican doesn’t win confirmation, let him run against his tormentor for the Senate. (Steven Malanga, 28 February 2003, City Journal)
If the Democratic effort to kill the appointment of Miguel Estrada to the U.S. Court of Appeals succeeds, Estrada should return the favor by moving back to New York State and challenging his chief tormentor, Senator Charles Schumer, in the 2004 elections.

Estrada, a Honduran immigrant who graduated from Columbia University and served in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of New York, would be a formidable candidate against Schumer. He could at one stroke derail the ambitious Schumer’s political career and solidify the Republican hold on the Senate.


Unfortunately, he'd need to climb over the corpses of George Pataki, Rudy Guiliani, and Peter King to get the nomination, but it's a clever idea. Posted by Orrin Judd at March 4, 2003 12:29 AM

A New York Republican is a really strange bird.



I started out as a Rockefeller for President (yes, that's Nelson) many years ago while living in the state. After leaving the state, I rapidly evolved into a Reagan Republican.



The Republican tent in New York is a really big one. The extremes of views held within the Party in NY are bizarre.



But, with the huge Hispanic population in NYC and environs, Mr. Estrada would seem an electoral odds-on favorate to depose Mr. Schumer from the Senate.

And is Eliot Spitzer likely to be running for anything soonish?

Spitzer would have to run as a Democrat. King is a liberal Republican Congressman.

This seems like a good idea if Dems succeed in blocking Estrada.

I'm not from NY but it seems Pataki and Guiliani could be Schumer but I'm not sure if they're interested. King is interested but I'm not sure he'd win.

The problem for Estrade is given the long lead time for campaigns and Rove's penchent for clean GOP primaries he would have to go for it over the next few months.

Agree with others - Estrada beating Schumer would be a great form of payback.

Remember former US District Court Judge Jeff Sessions, whose nomination for Court of Appeals was hung up by Democrats. He's now Senator Sessions (Alabama).
