SIGNS:
Stones Self-Organize into Circles (Sarah Graham, January 20, 2003, Scientific American)It sounds like the stuff of science fiction: stones arranging themselves into perfect circles or elaborate labyrinths. But the forces behind these mysterious patterns, which are commonly found in many polar and high alpine environments, are much more pedestrian--simple cyclic freezing and thawing of the surrounding ground. A numerical model that can account for the unusual patterns is described in the current issue of the journal Science.

African swallows. (Or perhaps European.) :D
Posted by: Just John at February 3, 2003 4:14 PMSelf-organizing circles seem tame, to me anyway, compared with hexagonal pillars, like at Giant's Causeway.

Posted by: Charlie Murtaugh at February 3, 2003 9:04 PMBut African swallows are non-migratory.
