NUMBSKULL:

Someone else who heard this is going to have to vouch for it, because I honestly wouldn't believe it if I read it somewhere: here's a rough transcript of a discussion between Don Imus and Chris Matthews this morning:

Imus: What would you do about Iraq?

Matthews: I think we need to keep doing what we're doing and let the inspections work.

Imus: What if they don't work?

Matthews: What do you mean by "don't work"?

Imus: They don't find anything and we know he still has stuff.

Matthews: You know, I think you just have to trust him. Saddam may be evil but you have to trust that he can be deterred. It's like parking tickets--the reason you don't just park anywhere you feel like is because you know you'll get in trouble. It's the same with him attacking us.

It might have been helpful if Imus had pointed out that when Saddam parks illegally there may be a significant weapon onboard the truck.

It's not up on Lexis-Nexis yet. I'll let you know when it is.

I heard the two of them talking, and I am in broad agreement with your take on it. I think Matthews offered several examples of how we believe in deterrence - maybe capital punishment as well - but definitely discussed parking tickets.

Here something that ties in better to one of your subsequent posts: Mathews also mentioned how, as Admin Assisstant to Tip O'Neil, they always struggled to get a speaker to rebut Reagan.

Whatever sap takes the job (if it is a Washington heavy) generally listens to the President, then runs off to deliver some anti-climactic post-script. The Pres has had days to draft, rehearse, and load the teleprompter.

Mismatch. But man, they turned a mismatch into a rout last night.

The GOP and the right can only by helped as the left is further defined by the likes of Matthews, Dowd, Kennedy...

Also, why do you "know you'll get in trouble"? Because there are police
with guns
who will bring trouble to you. How can Saddam know he'll get into trouble, if after sponsoring numerous terrorist attacks against us, including probably 9/11, no police come after him?
