MELTDOWN (via David Cohen):

Reno doesn't rule out a bid for U.S. Senate if seat is open (Peter Wallsten, Jan. 13, 2003, Miami Herald)
Former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno told reporters after she lost a bid for governor last year that she was done with politics.

Not so fast.

Reached by telephone at her Kendall home last week, Reno refused to rule out a bid for the U.S. Senate representing Florida should Bob Graham decide to run for president.

Add another nomination to the list--along with Al Sharpton in the Presidential; Cynthia McKinney in GA; and Carol Mosley-Braun in IL--of those races where the National Party has to work to knock off a member of its base. The Democratic Party is going to spend the Spring of '04 opposing blacks and women who are running for office. That should be good for turnout in November. Sometimes you realize that there are people out there who live in an entirely different reality. I remember a Carter administration official saying, shortly after he left office, that Carter would be remembered as a great president for the Panama Canal Treaty.

Janet Reno is proud of her honorable and entirely admirable service to the country as Attorney-General.

If I were the finance chairman of the Republican National Committee, I'd schedule regular appointments with Rev. Sharpton, Ms. McKinney and Ms. Mosley-Braun at discrete locations. To each appointment I'd bring a large suitcase filled with cash and the admonishment to "keep campaigning."

Let me just say, I'm pulling for Janet to clear the primaries. This is shaping up to be the most wonderful presidential election year I can remember -- and I can remember 1984. May the Good Lord have mercy on me, I may actually suffer a heart attack from laughing so hard at the Dems.
