EUROPE, R.I.P.:

Treasury: Britain can't afford Iraq war (Michael Smith, November 2, 2002, Chicago Sun-Times)
Britain cannot afford to send ground troops to the Gulf to take part in a war against Iraq, the chancellor of the exchequer, Gordon Brown, has told the Ministry of Defense.

There is no more relevant nation in Europe than Britain and it is teetering on the edge of irrelevance. Posted by Orrin Judd at November 2, 2002 10:14 AM

This week's Spectator has a curious essay

on this subject, saying that Britain needs to

spend more on modernizing its military.

It is the 4th ranking economy and military

power in the world already.

And Taiwan could whip it.

Y'all are talking about relative rankings which are irrelevant concerning a specific mission.

My wife is from Taiwan and she says the Taiwanese are wimps -- the French of the Orient. The South Koreans would wipe the floor with them.

The "French of the Orient"? Goodness, they can't be THAT bad! They have a very large neighbor to their west who wants to devour them. That should focus them somewhat.
