EERIE LACKAWANA:
U.S. Citizen Killed by CIA Linked to N.Y. Terror Case (Michael Powell and Dana Priest, November 9, 2002, Washington Post)The U.S. citizen killed by a missile launched from a pilotless drone aircraft over Yemen was the ringleader of an alleged terrorist sleeper cell in Lackawanna, N.Y., administration officials said yesterday.Kamal Derwish, one of two unindicted co-conspirators in the Lackawanna case, died along with the intended target of the attack, senior al Qaeda leader Abu Ali al-Harithi, who is accused of masterminding the October 2000 attack on the USS Cole in which 17 sailors died.
These two men and four others were traveling in a car outside the Yemeni capital of Sanaa when they were hit by a Hellfire missile operated at an undisclosed location by the CIA. Derwish had been identified by sources Thursday as Ahmed Hijazi, an alias.
The CIA knew Derwish had returned to Yemen and was, as one administration official described him, "a fellow traveler" in a tight circle of terrorists atop the United States' unofficial most-wanted list. But the CIA officers who targeted the car, following it via live video from the drone and ultimately firing the missile, did not know Derwish was a passenger, the official said.
But, as the administration official -- who asked not to be identified -- noted dryly, "it would not have made a difference. If you're a terrorist, you're a terrorist."
So much for the guys in Lackawana being an innocent study group. Posted by Orrin Judd at November 9, 2002 6:40 AM
Maybe he should let these go free as well as those haitians, that'll please the islamists, and you know, they vote too!
"A nation of laws" har har.
Well, yeah, except these guys are criminals.
Posted by: oj at November 9, 2002 9:57 AMSo are the haitians, whats your point?
Posted by: Mr. Epitsuk W Hrmbras at November 9, 2002 10:11 AMHow do you know the Haitians are criminals?
Posted by: oj at November 9, 2002 11:07 AMI think he's saying the Haitians broke the law by attempting to illegally immigrate. Sorry, not quite in the same league as being a terrorist and member of a sleeper cell.
Posted by: Kay Ford at November 9, 2002 11:21 AMWill Katie Kouric concede now that (this crowd's) having trained at Al Qaeda camps was probably a decent indicator of terror links...?

Ah, thank you, I see now...boy, that is not quite comparable, is it?
Yes,Mr. Judd, they broke the law.At least have the honesty to publicly advocate the formal repeal of immigration laws and disbanding the INS.Ignoring laws weakens the entire structure of law.Why should any of us feel morally bound to obey the law if we can make even a minimal case we might be useful to a politician?
Posted by: Mr. Giawx H Andl at November 9, 2002 2:26 PMI think we should do away with immigration law and disband the INS. No one checked my families papers when we got here and we killed the folks who objected to our arrival. Why should Haitians be any different?
Posted by: oj at November 9, 2002 5:34 PMMaybe they'll give you a nice reservation, too.
Posted by: Mrs. Huli P Nyntrarwes at November 9, 2002 6:31 PMIf we're so deracinated we can't defend ourselves from immigrants then we should be put out of our misery, as is happening in Europe.
