A REAL MR. MOM:

Lankan dad breast-feeds babies (AFP, October 31, 2002)
A 38-year-old Sri Lankan man, whose wife died three months ago, appears to have the ability to breast feed his two infant children, doctors told a local newspaper Wednesday.

B. Wijeratne from the central town of Walapone, 186 kilometres from the capital Colombo lost his wife when she died giving birth to their second child.

"My eldest daughter refused to be fed on powdered milk liquid in the feeding bottle," he said according to the Sinhalese-language daily Lankadeepa.

"I was so moved one evening and to stop her crying I offered my breast. I then realised that I was capable of breast feeding her," Wijeratne said.

I have read over the years in a number of anthopological works dealing with traditional peoples that this is indeed quite possible. You should be aware that with it will come a permanent change in the nature of your pectorals so you may not wish to shower at the gym or wear anything but rather loose clothes, perhaps with a support garment. However, if you're working at home, perhaps you will find this acceptable. But will the wife? You could wind up looking like something one finds in the back of men's magazines, something of a rather specialized taste. A wise man might take a pass on this possibility.

In a column, Jared Diamond claimed that, with hormone treatments, this was, in fact, possible. He was for it of course.
