HOLLYWOOD'S PRO-WAR MINORITY REPORTS:
Cruise and Spielberg back war (BBC, 26 September, 2002)The pair made their feelings known at a press conference in Rome, where they have been promoting the Italian release of the blockbuster Minority Report."If Bush, as I believe, has reliable information on the fact that Saddam Hussein is making weapons of mass destruction, I cannot not support the policies of his government," Spielberg said.
The director added that those policies were "solid and rooted in reality".
Cruise also spoke out in support of the US president.
"Personally, I don't have all the information President Bush has," said the star.
"But I believe Saddam has committed many crimes against humanity and his own people."
Interesting that it's two guys who are quite involved in defending their religions. Posted by Orrin Judd at September 27, 2002 6:17 PM
This is interesting, and tremendously heartening, not merely because Spielberg and Cruise are two of the genuinely biggest names in Hollywood - much, much more so than Barbra Streisand, who is, let's face it, a has-been. (When was the last time _she_ had a hit album or movie? And Steven and Tom come out with new blockbusters just about every year.)
I'm not particularly fond of Scientology, but it seems that Tom Cruise does have his head screwed on right when it comes to the critical issues of national security. And Spielberg may have been a Clinton buddy, but he is also a devoted defender of Israel, and he knows where the threat lies.
"...I cannot not support the policies of his government," Spielberg said. Since when is it only Bush's govt? It's Spielberg's govt too, and mine. I'm happy to see them kick Babs in the teeth, but Spielberg has got a strange way of putting things.
