CIRCUS ACT:

Westminster's odd couple (Nick Assinder, 28 September, 2002, BBC)
John Major and Edwina Currie were lovers.

No - not even writing it down makes it any less mind bending.

The man who tucked his vest into his underpants had a four year affair with the most outspoken and sexually interested woman of her political generation - a sort of Essex girl Margaret Thatcher.

It's like learning that Betty Boop had been doing it with Elmer Fudd all those years.

No wonder they kept it quiet for so long.

And it's still hard to decide which one of them should be the most ashamed.

Major yawn.... We were all such fans yesterday. Now that we've found out he's human, we're upset.

Life's too short, Orrin.

I never liked him cause he was too much a Europhile, but he seemed like a decent guy, not a Clinton.

Well what about Ike, whom I believe 'we like.' Isn't the point here one of discretion rather than indecency? Maybe John Major is a bloody genius for having been able to keep his dalliance from the public eye for so long. True, Clinton, for all his charm and abilities, will not be able to shed the sleazy image.... But surely these are not the only politicians (or voters for that matter), Liberal or Conservative or Libertarian or Atheist for that matter, who have looked askance at the tenth commandment....

What about Ike? Surely you aren't resurrecting the Kay Sommersby slur?
