When Don­ald Trump called for a ban on all Muslims im­mig­rat­ing to the United States on Monday, he also cited a poll that pro­duced some sur­pris­ing stat­ist­ics. Fifty-one per­cent of Muslims in the U.S., the poll said, be­lieve that they should be al­lowed to live un­der sharia law. And 25 per­cent, ac­cord­ing to the poll, be­lieve that vi­ol­ence is jus­ti­fied against those who of­fend Is­lam or the Proph­et Mo­hammed.

The trust­wor­thi­ness of that poll, however, is far from un­im­peach­able.

The poll was com­mis­sioned by the Cen­ter for Se­cur­ity Policy--which was foun­ded by Frank Gaffney, whose con­spir­acy the­or­ies about Muslims work­ing to in­sti­tute sharia law in the United States led to the Amer­ic­an Con­ser­vat­ive Uni­on to ban him from its an­nu­al Con­ser­vat­ive Polit­ic­al Ac­tion Con­fer­ence in 2011.
