NationallyThe 2008 nominee, Sen. John McCain, was in fourth place just 10 days before the Iowa caucuses. He had spent most of 2007 trailing far behind Rudy Giuliani. Four years ago, Mitt Romney led early but was overtaken by three different candidates before voting began. The current campaign is notable for how large the GOP field is. Donald Trump has dominated the conversation but hasn't yet managed to lift his average above 30%.
