HIRSUTE, BUT SENSITIVE:

How hairy skin is wired for touch (Daniel Cossins, 1/09/12, Cosmos Online)

The complex system of nerve cells in hairy skin has been seen in detail for the first time, revealing that different types of hair follicle are tuned to sense different sorts of soft touch.

The research provides the first full picture of how the nerve cells that carry signals from hair on the skin to the spinal cord are organised, and enhances our understanding of how sensory information is processed for the perception of delicate touches.
