Palestinian president to seek unity government deal with Hamas (Phoebe Greenwood, 11/20/11, guardian.co.uk)The Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, will meet the Hamas leader, Khaled Mashal, in Cairo this week to agree details of a new unity government, hoping to close a six-year schism between the political factions that has separated the West Bank from Gaza.
The meeting is scheduled to take place in Cairo on Friday. A spokesperson for the prime minister, Salam Fayyad, confirmed on Sunday he would resign his position should the Fatah and Hamas factions agree to reconcile.
It's a healthy step, but they need to unilaterally declare nationhood next.
