Syria's Assad Will Fall, Says U.S. Official (Bhaskar Prasad, November 10, 2011, IB Times)Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's departure is "inevitable," a senior U.S. official said Wednesday.
"Almost all the Arab leaders, foreign ministers who I talk to say the same thing: Assad's rule is coming to an end. It is inevitable,'' Jeffrey Feltman, the assistant secretary of state for Near Wastern affairs, told a Senate committee.
The Cold War ended when Ronald Reagan said that Communism was going to fall and not because we'd defeat it but because it was a failure on its own terms. Mr. Obama would have done well to avoid trying detente with the Middle East he found and to follow the same line, which W had laid out, that the replacement of dictatorship by democracy was inevitable.
