Offshore wind projects powerful enough to provide electricity to 1.5 million homes have been proposed along the Atlantic coast, but the permitting process can take up to seven years, according to the authors of a new report. [...]

"This report makes it clear that offshore wind is ready to take off in New Hampshire, but we need the Obama administration to clear the runway," said Jessica O'Hare, program associate with Environment New Hampshire, a co-sponsor of the report. "By harnessing the vast, untapped wind resources off our coast, we can create local good-paying jobs, reduce our dependence upon fossil fuels and take a big step toward combating global warming."

Currently, there is not a single offshore wind turbine off the Atlantic coast.
