SURE, ROSS PEROT WAS CRAZY...:

New Republican heavyweight takes a few punches from the Democrats (Walter Alarkon, 03/10/10, The Hill)

By attacking Ryan, Democrats can rally support for healthcare reform and neutralize a lawmaker whose name appears on GOP shortlists for 2012 and 2016.

While Democrats are swinging, Republican leaders are backing away and letting Ryan take the hits.


...but as Bill Clinton and GHWB found out, there was nothing to be gained by attacking the only guy in the room who seemed to be taking deficits seriously. Mr. Ryan is sane and, while the GOP is too afraid of attacks over entitlements to embrace him, it will be a big mistake for Democrats to dismiss his reform proposals. George W. Bush beat them twice running on just such ideas.
