In May, Freudenthal took heat from state Republicans after offering his wife as one of the candidates for an open federal judgeship. President Barack Obama, whom Freudenthal campaigned for in 2008, nominated Nancy Freudenthal — a corporate attorney and the former chairwoman of the Wyoming Tax Commission — for the position in December. No action has been taken yet on the nomination.

The governor acknowledged Thursday that the issue factored into his decision not to run.
