WHO HE SHOULD AND WHO HE WILL ARE TOTALLY DIFFERENT MATTERS:

U.S. soccer: Altidore hopes to make an impact for U.S.
(Dan Rasmussen, Deseret News)

Billed by some as the Next Great Hope for American soccer, much fanfare and anticipation has followed the starlet from the start of his club career with the New York Red Bulls back in 2006 until now. Rather than get up in any of it, however, Altidore insists he's squarely focused on simply trying to become the best player he can.

And he'll be the first to tell you he's far from being there at this point in his relatively young career.

"I think I still have a long way to go," he said. "I try to keep myself grounded and just understand that success comes for a reason. It's not because you're lucky or it's given to you. You have to work hard to get it, so if I can continue to (work hard), hopefully more good things will come my way.

"That's where it starts — it's a groundwork from there. Hopefully if you're a talented individual, the rest will take over."

Pick Your USA Starting XI Against El Salvador: Goal.com wants to know who you think should be in Bob Bradley's starting XI. (Goal, Sep 4, 2009)
Do you think it's time for Jozy Altidore and Charlie Davies to get a start together up front? Who would you like to see filling in for Oguchi Onyewu on the back line? Is it time to see a new paring in the center of the midfield?
