AS WITH BILL CLINTON...:

G.O.P. Support May Be Vital to Obama on Afghan War (HELENE COOPER, 9/03/09, NY Times)

As President Obama prepares to decide whether to send additional troops to Afghanistan, the political climate appears increasingly challenging for him, leaving him in the awkward position of relying on the Republican Party, and not his own, for support.

...the eventual success of an Obama Presidency is dependent on him working with the GOP rather than the Democrats. Recall that Bill Clinton is justly celebrated for three things--free trade agreements; Welfare Reform; and not spending the Peace Dividend--all of them opposed by his own party.
