U.S. President Barack Obama was last night facing a major dilemma over protectionist policies which could "poison the wells of world commerce" and lead to bitter trade wars.

Just hours after Gordon Brown's passionate plea against protectionism at the Economic World Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the new leader was in urgent discussions with aides to find a way of balancing two competing demands.

His problem is that his massive economic stimulus bill passed by the lower house of Congress last week had "buy American" provisions attached to it by lawmakers.

What beautiful symbolism is the UR vetoes the first big bill the Democratic Congress sends him.
