HUH?:
Obama pays public tribute to Lincoln's unifying legacy (Guy Adams, 12 January 2009, Independent)
Barack Obama paid a visit to the Lincoln Memorial at the weekend, publicly honouring the man who inspired his career and whose legacy is to provide a major theme for the inauguration in eight days.
You can play counterhistoricals with Lincoln all day long, but the fact is that he fought a bloody civil war and rather than unifying the country it left us divided for the next 100 years, and divided in such a way that blacks were barely citizens in the states of the Old Confederacy. He has no unifying legacy. Posted by Orrin Judd at January 11, 2009 7:30 PM
