David Cameron plans New Year return for 'big beasts' Ken Clarke and Iain Duncan Smith (Andrew Porter, 03 Dec 2008, Daily Telegraph)

The Tory leader is seeking to boost the quality of his shadow ministerial team ahead of the next general election. Among those likely to be approached are Ken Clarke, the former Chancellor, and Iain Duncan Smith, the former leader.

Mr Cameron has publicly praised his shadow cabinet for being "a government in waiting." However, there have been suggestions that beyond his closest allies at the top, the team lacks the experience, confidence and potency that he demands.
