EVEN MICHAEL DUKAKIS HAD BEEN IN THE MILITARY:

With Palin, GOP sets sights on suburban women (SIRI AGRELL, September 5, 2008, Globe and Mail)

On the day her name was announced as the Republican choice for vice-president, Sarah Palin and her family were in Dayton, Ohio, posing for pictures with People magazine, an American flag pin on the politician's lapel and baby Trig on her hip.

“Trig is perfection, and I cannot imagine life without him,” she told the magazine of her son, a four-month-old boy with Down syndrome.

The issue appeared on newsstands Friday, as Ms. Palin and her presidential running mate, John McCain, kicked up their campaign, and is the only interview the Alaska Governor has granted since her ascent to the national stage knocked a nation off its feet.

Ms. Palin is on the cover holding Trig, a cover line explaining that she is also “coping with her teen daughter's pregnancy.” Inside, family photos show her kneeling over a dead caribou and pointing an automatic weapon.

Not that it's necessarily a qualification for president, but is it possible that Barrack Obama is the first nominee to have never fired a gun?
