HOW CAN ONE LOOK GOOD DEFENDING THE INDEFENSIBLE?:

Will the EU treaty destroy Gordon Brown? (Andrew Gimson, 06/03/2008, Daily Telegraph)

Will Europe destroy Gordon Brown? Never has the Prime Minister looked more vulnerable at the Dispatch Box than when trying and failing to explain why he has broken Tony Blair's promise to hold a referendum on Europe.

The explanation for betraying this manifesto commitment is simple: Mr Brown knows he would lose the referendum. David Cameron invited him to admit this, and Mr Brown refused to do so.

The price of this understandable reluctance to tell the truth was very high, for Mr Brown was forced to fall back on sophistries and evasions which fooled no one. How he must rue the day when Mr Blair conceded that referendum.

Nick Clegg must rue it even more. Europe looks as if it has already destroyed the new Liberal Democrat leader, who had as much difficulty trying to command the House as his hapless predecessor, Sir Menzies Campbell, used to have.
