A brain-damaged man has been woken from a six-year-long coma-like state by pioneering surgery.

The 38-year-old man, who had flitted in and out of consciousness following a mugging, can now talk, chew and swallow.

His doctors describe the change in his condition as "remarkable", while his family say the treatment, which involved the implantation of tiny electrodes in his brain, has given him a quality of life they never thought possible.

Lucky he isn't a Schiavo.
