Royal under siege over youths job plan (Martin Arnold, April 6 2007, Financial Times)

Ségolène Royal was on Friday scrambling to defend her latest plan to find jobs for unqualified youths amid growing criticism from opponents on the left and right as well as trade unions and student groups.

In a climate of confusion after a rally in Bordeaux on Thursday night, the Socialist presidential candidate made seemingly conflicting statements about her proposal for a contrat premiere chance, or first chance contract.
