SLEEPER IN SEATTLE:

M's burn Angels (Bob Finnigan, 4/06/06, Seattle Times)

When the Mariners signed Jarrod Washburn, most figured they had added a quality pitcher to their rotation.

Unsaid and almost overlooked in the move was the addition of some gumption to a club that needed heart as much as a hot bat in the lineup.

With Seattle's bullpen already thin after only two games and the lead getting thinner Wednesday, Washburn showed what it all added up to.

In his Mariners debut, the left-hander fought off fatigue through the seventh inning and helped his new team hold on to a 6-4 win over his former team, the Los Angeles Angels, at Safeco Field.

George Sherrill pitched the ninth for his first career save.

And they signed him away from a rival.
