COMPLETE WITH LYING IN STATE

Death of ABC's Peter Jennings ends era of the top television anchorman (Alec Russell, Telegraph, 08/09/05)

America yesterday mourned the death of the last of the network news anchormen to appear nightly on its television screens with the reverence other nations reserve for the passing of heads of state.

As the face of ABC news, Peter Jennings, who died of lung cancer aged 67 on Sunday night, was one of the country's best known figures.

For two decades he and his rivals from NBC and CBS defined the importance of a story by their very presence and their self-confident and slightly ponderous style.

But the networks' ratings have plummeted as viewers turn to blogs . . .

Foreign reporting is just like domestic reporting, with perhaps a less obsessive regard for accuracy.
