AT THE FORGE:

Mini Taiwan is a giant India must look up to (PERCY FERNANDEZ, 8/10/05, INDIA TIMES)

Why India needs Taiwan and why Taiwan needs India are questions frequently asked by optimists from both sides. Pessimists -- and there are plenty -- challenge the importance of Taiwan and their will to forge partnerships with India. [...]

Taiwan is ranked first in Asia and fourth in the world in growth competitiveness.

All these and much more indicate that Taiwan matters in Asia and is growing to be a towering force.

"It will be win-win situation for India if both come together and particularly if Taiwan invests in India", says Dr Srikanth Kondapalli, Research Fellow at the Institute of Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA). [...]

"While India is yearning for more investments, Taiwan wants political recognition, the raison d'etre that subtly encompasses its relationships with other countries including India", says Dr Kondaplli.

Will India offer Taiwan political recognition? [...]

Indian strategic experts feel Taiwan has the best intelligence on China. "India doesn't know anything about China. There may be a handful who know about China in India. And Taiwan is the only way through which we can know about China. This realization has dawned on the Indian establishment", says a retired senior intelligence officer.

It is increasingly being seen that a strong relationship with Taiwan will be of immense help to India's interests.

The U.S. will bring them together because we all have common interests and enemies.
