Iraqi Shi'ite Coalition Top Vote-Getter in Landmark Polls (VOA News, 13 February 2005)

Iraq's election commission says an alliance of Shi'ite Islamist groups has won the most votes in last month's landmark elections to form a transitional national assembly.

A coalition of Kurdish parties finished second, followed by a slate led by interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi.

The Shi'ite alliance won about 48 percent of the January 30 vote, while the Kurdish coalition won about 26 percent. The Allawi bloc won nearly 14 percent.

The insurgents didn't do so well, eh?
