Syria Seeking to Pressure Israel Via a Backdoor Route (IsraelNN.com, 1/21/05)

The Saudi-based al-Watan newspaper reports Syrian President Bashar el-Assad has contacted United Nations Secretary General Kofi Anan, indicating Damascus’ willingness to assist the PA in reaching a hunda temporary cessation of warfare involving the PA and terror organizations. The report states Damascus has also made contact with a number of European communities as well, including Britain and Germany.

El-Assad however stipulates such a move must come in compliance with Syria’s demands, including a revitalization of diplomatic contact between Damascus and Jerusalem. Previous statements of intent, overtures of peace made by the Syrian ruler have been rejected by Israel, with Jerusalem explaining the statements are meaningless as long as Damascus continues to support Hizbullah terror against Israel.

Iraq votes by month's end. The Palestinians just voted and are looking to cut a deal with Israel. The Sa'uds have scheduled municipal elections. Even France is pressing Syria to get out of the Lebanon. Assad has to feel the walls closing in.
