PREACHING TO THE CHOIR
A Rich Nation, a Poor Continent: His trip to Africa is the perfect opportunity for President Bush to call on the richest Americans to help the world's poorest citizens. (JEFFREY D. SACHS, 7/09/03, NY Times)At a time when President Bush has lavished billions of dollars in tax cuts on the richest Americans, his trip to Africa presents him with the perfect opportunity to call on them to take some responsibility for the dire state of the world's poorest citizens.
Mr. Sachs, according to economist friends, is a reasonably well regarded fellow in the profession and a serious guy. He's got an opportunity here to reach many through the Times at a time when the President has focussed attention on his topic. Does he really think anyone who he's trying to convince is still reading after that first sentence? I'd be interested in what he thinks should be done about Africa, but not at the expense of wading through a partisan hack attack. Posted by Orrin Judd at July 9, 2003 12:18 PM
