DESPITE?

America's prison population grew again in 2002 despite a declining crime rate...

Just in case anyone believes that the general liberal bias in the media has been even remotely affected by the rise of conservative alternatives, perhaps no single line in newspaper history has been more ridiculed--nor more justly--than the original NY Times version of the above. Yet here it is repeated by the AP and thereby appears today in thousands of newspapers across the nation and the world. Consider how much differently that sentence reads if you just swap out the word "despite" and replace it with "causing" or even just "paralleling". Posted by Orrin Judd at July 28, 2003 1:57 PM
