THE TIMES VS. THE LAW:

A Fiery First Encounter for Senate Candidates (DAVID KOCIENIEWSKI, October 6, 2002, NY Times)
Mr. Torricelli dropped out on Monday, 36 days before the election, and although New Jersey law only expressly permits candidate substitutions at least 51 days before, the State Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Mr. Lautenberg's name could be placed on the ballot.

The Times may be biased but it is still a newspaper, with an obligation to report facts. Note how they're forced to report this one: the law "only expressly" permits substitution up to 51 days before the election. One assumes that, since the Times itself demanded that this time limit be set aside, its editors are privvy to some hidden meaning within the text that is not apparent to the rest of us.
