THE EXCEPTION WHO PROVES THE RULE :
Warner Applauds Legislation Honoring Lafayette (Office of Senator John Warner, July 25, 2002)Last night, the US Senate unanimously approved a joint resolution authored by Senator John Warner conferring honorary citizenship of the United States on Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette. The Marquis is only the sixth individual to receive such an honor in the history of the US Congress. The House passed an identical resolution on Monday. For his many contributions to the founding of this nation, Lafayette was previously named as an honorary citizen of both Virginia and Maryland. With the passage of this joint resolution, Lafayette will now be recognized as an honorary citizen of the United States.
He thereby joins Mother Teresa, Winston Churchil, Raoul Wallenberg, and William Penn and his wife, Hannah. Now that's what we'd call select company.
