WHAT HAVE RESULTS TO DO WITH DOGMA?:

Smaller Class Sizes May Not Help (Eddy Ramírez, March 13, 2008, US News)

Putting fewer children in classrooms has long been a popular option for schools trying to narrow the achievement gap for struggling students. But a new study suggests that smaller class sizes may not level the playing field.

The study, published in the March issue of the Elementary School Journal, shows that small classes benefit high-achieving kids more than low-performing students. In fact, the achievement gap between the two groups in kindergarten and first grade is larger in small classes than in regular classes, says Spyros Konstantopoulos, assistant professor of learning sciences at Northwestern University and author of the study.

Kids used to get adequate educations in oneroom schoolhouses.

Bruno may be sleeping in, so I'll pick up the slack:

Assuming that the teachers' unions and education establishment will always act as if they hate kids is, at the very least, a successful positive predictive model. It explains smaller classrooms, administration heavy school-districts, "professional days," etc., etc., etc.

It might even be a good normative model.

Correction: Putting fewer children in classrooms has long been a popular option for schools trying to ... make work so additional teachers can be added to the rolls of the unions.

Since the whole public school experience for students is one big propaganda package, the size of the classroom is irrelevant. Fascism/Communism "educated" the masses in rallies of tens of thousands at a time.

Obscenity. Abomination. How it that reducing the so-called "achievement gap" is a legitimate educational objective? Is that what it has come to, when the covetous are to indulge their sin by being content with less, lest they see their neghbor with more? Obviously, the better equipped and better prepared students will derive more benefit from every resource. I suppos that if equality of result is the goal, we had best have the more gifted children equipped with those science-fiction brain interrupters, and stop pretendin that we wish to educate all of our citizens.
