Iraqi cleric calls off militias (BBC, 3/30/08)

Iraqi Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr has ordered his fighters off the streets of Basra and other cities in an effort to end clashes with security forces.

He said in a statement that his movement wanted the Iraqi people to stop the bloodshed and maintain the nation's independence and stability.

The government, which had set a deadline to hand over weapons in return for cash, called the move "positive".

If nothing else, the exercise clarified who's in charge.

No, it showed weakness on the part of Mookie. He blinked first, which in Arab culture means he will soon be rather dead.

He's also dropped a whole bag of dimes: anyone resisting the Iraqi army is now a Tater-approved target. Coordinates to follow.

Except I'm reading that he's refusing to turn in weapons until the government "fights the occupation." So it doesn't sound like it's over.

Exactly. They won so they're dictating terms. Winners don't give up their arms.

Au contraire, Mssr. Contrarian. The terms of the deal are the same as the Sunni deal: they get to keep their AK's and sidearms. Bigger boomers get confiscated.

The Iraqi government isn't giving up its arms either. So I guess both sides won, then?

If Mookie is still in Iran, then he lost big-time. He won't even face the Iraqi Army, a bunch of renegade Shi'a? He's sliding down the pole.

But he's not stupid. The government would be glad to kill his entire "army", and he knows it. The US would likewise be 'glad' to help.

Mookie is one of the biggest obstacles to a stable Iraq and takes his orders from Iran. Why OJ keeps considering him Iraq's George Washington is hard to understand. Let the Iraq army continue to chew up his army until he isn't a threat anymore.

We'll take them with us when we leave and Mookie will still have his.

Posted by: oj at March 30, 2008 7:28 PM

The Sunni won't get to keep theirs, not if they want to stay in Iraq.

Mookie isn't Washington. W is.

Mookie is Andrew Jackson.

Posted by: oj at March 30, 2008 7:53 PM

Mookie is Malcolm.

That's a good one too. Black America's tragedy was following Martin into mau-mau instead of Malcolm into self-reliance.
