Move over Norway, Iceland is now the coolest place to live (ETHAN MCNERN, 11/28/07, The Scotsman)

ICELAND has overtaken Norway as the world's most desirable country in which to live, according to the latest UN index on human development.

Rich, free-market countries dominate the top places, with Iceland, Norway, Australia, Canada and Ireland the first five, while AIDS-afflicted sub-Saharan African states are once again at the bottom.

The United States slips to 12th place from eighth last year in the UN Human Development Index, with the UK taking 16th place behind Austria at 15th.

Yea but those $15 pints really put a damper on my desires

The U.S. is 12th? 12th?!?!?

And Ireland is a "rich, free-market country?"

When did that happen? Apparently, it doesn't take much/long to turn a country around. When we researched in anticipation of a visit to Ireland back in 1990, we read in more than one place that Ireland was mostly peopled with folks that were in grinding poverty. And that wasn't even counting Northern Ireland. We heard about the Celtic Tiger and the cyber-revolution, but to discover that it's a rich country is truly amazing.

Too bad Iceland becomes a white zone during World War Z. That's what you get for not having a military.

Iceland has a military, Bryan - the US Army, the US Navy, the US Air Force...

When Ireland joined the EU, got some subsidies and a drop of trade barriers with the rest of Europe without accumulating the crippling bureacracy of most of the EU, and then became the favored european headquarters of any non-European firm wanting to do business in the EU.

Iceland, wonder why it's named that.
Oh, & according the dreaded CIA's Factbook, Iceland is a signatory to just about every UN/NGO, Transnational, Progressive agreement invented:
party to: Air Pollution, Air Pollution-Persistent Organic Pollutants, Biodiversity, Climate Change, Climate Change-Kyoto Protocol, Desertification, Endangered Species, Hazardous Wastes, Kyoto Protocol, Law of the Sea, Marine Dumping, Ozone Layer Protection, Ship Pollution, Transboundary Air Pollution, Wetlands, Whaling
signed, but not ratified: Environmental Modification, Marine Life Conservation.
BTW, GDP per capita is over $5,000 less than the U.S.
