IT ALL BECOMES CLEAR:
Pelosi and Diplomacy (The Nation, April 30, 2007)
Once upon a time, Republicans believed in diplomacy. They spoke with enemies. Recall Richard Nixon: As President, he negotiated with the Soviets, the Chinese and the North Vietnamese, who were shooting at US troops at the time. Nowadays, the Bush Administration too often dismisses diplomacy and, when it does, is cheered on by neoconservatives and conservatives who misguidedly equate communication with weakness. The recent hullabaloo about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's trip to Syria is illustrative.
Democrats are the new Nixon. It's certainly true that, in the interests of stability, he wanted to prop up the USSR, just as they're seeking to salvage Sunni dictatorships. It's just odd to think that a badge of honor. Posted by Orrin Judd at April 13, 2007 1:01 PM
I'm surprised the following theory has not been considered by anybody, not even Rush. This is not a matter of ego, but (to me) common sense. My theory:
In the event that the DemoRats succeed in impeaching Bush & Cheney, Bela Pelosi will become President. To date, she has had virtually no foreign policy experience. Thus all these trips to Iraq, Syria and possibly Iran next.
This will assuage those who might not vote for impeachment because she would need training in foreign affairs at a dangerous time in history.
Posted by: obc at April 13, 2007 3:09 PMSuch Nixon analogies make sense only if we start bombing Iran (secretly of course). The left forgets half the equation.
Posted by: Brian at April 13, 2007 5:31 PMThe Nation ignores one thing - Carl Albert did not go to North Vietnam, now did he?
Posted by: ratbert at April 13, 2007 11:46 PMobc: that won't happen. Dems can only impeach one person at a time. If Bush's removed from office, Cheney'll be president. He'll appoint his vice president right away. If Cheney is impeached, Bush can appoint another VP. So dream on Pelosi. Anyway, it took 2 years to impeach Clinton, and 2/3 in the Senate to give a guilty verdict. The Dems are running out of time. As a matter of fact, they won't dare. An impeachment is more detrimental to the Dems. Nobody, except their nutroots, would like to see a constitutional crisis during a war. Think about sucking out all the oxygen from the wannabes' campaigns to get rid off a president who cannot run again. As Bush said: bring it on.
I think one of Pelosi's intention was to undermind Hillary. Pelosi wants to be the top bitch, she hogs all the attention, and Hillary cannot denounce her. (bitch, hog: so anti-Muslim)
