Obama's Past Offers Ammo for Critics (RYAN KEITH, January 17, 2007, The Associated Press)

He voted against requiring medical care for aborted fetuses who survive. He supported allowing retired police officers to carry concealed weapons, but opposed allowing people to use banned handguns to defend against intruders in their homes. And the list of sensitive topics goes on.

With only a slim, two-year record in the U.S. Senate, Obama doesn't have many controversial congressional votes which political opponents can frame into attack ads. But his eight years as an Illinois state senator are sprinkled with potentially explosive land mines, such as his abortion and gun control votes.

Obama _ who filed papers this week creating an exploratory committee to seek the 2008 Democratic nomination _ may also find himself fielding questions about his actions outside public office, from his acknowledgment of cocaine use in his youth to a more recent land purchase from a political supporter who is facing charges in an unrelated kickback scheme involving investment firms seeking state business.

Obama was known in the Illinois Capitol as a consistently liberal senator who reflected the views of voters in his Chicago district.

What wouldn't you give to be Hillary's Carville? It's going to be like shooting fish in a barrel.

No kidding. The fact that he seems to have spent years in an Indonesian madrassa isn't going to go over well, either.

Super. Baraka Hussein Obama is a gun-grabbing baby-killer. What a great candidate! Can't miss.

Hillary is a gun grabbing baby killer who voted for the war.

The primaries are not the general. The primaries are a contest to see who is the biggest gun-grabbing baby killer who supports single payer health care.

I hope Hillary wins, but as long as Obama speaks in platitudes while Edwards an Hillary go negative on his Front Runner status, he's going to get his shot at the title.

Mrs. BJ is way to the right on the war. You would think her state included Hymietown, infra. of something.

None of the Democrats really know what to do about Israel. (Harry Truman did his job well.) They seem to be moving towarda position of, "George Bush is a poo-poo head, but it's too late to get out now."

To be fair to Obama, he did go on Monday Night Football sporting a Bears' hat.

Hillary will have her moment when she repudiates everything about Iraq. Probably sometime in August. She will become Kerry unless she finds a cogent denunciation. Further conflict between Israel and its enemies will only complicate things for her (and the rest of the Dems, as Lou noted). Ditto for the situation with Iran.

Obama will have to figure out a way to go on a hunting trip with some rabbis this fall. Preferably Orthodox. It would help if he wears a sidearm.

Jim - An Illinois senator rooting for the Bears? Not a shock although Hillary wasn't bright enough to keep her team loyalties consistent.

As for Israel the American jewish vote still went 90%+ for the Dems in '06 despite Dems arguing against Israel self defense. So why should the Dems bend over to the needs of the jewish vote (like the african american vote)?
